Summary
San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, was founded by settlers from New Spain in 1776 with the Presidio and Mission San Francisco de Asís. The 1849 California Gold Rush spurred rapid growth, making it the largest West Coast city. Rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake, it became a hub for liberal activism.
