Santiago del Estero, situated in northern Argentina, is the capital of the Santiago del Estero Province. Founded in 1553 by Francisco de Aguirre, it is considered the oldest city in Argentina. The city is nicknamed "Madre de Ciudades" (Mother of Cities) and is a center for folklore.
