Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, lies in the Sarajevo valley along the Miljacka River. It became an Ottoman stronghold in the 15th century, marking the empire's expansion into Europe. The city tragically became the site of Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination in 1914, triggering World War I.
