Vorkuta is a coal-mining town in the Komi Republic, Russia, north of the Arctic Circle. Founded in 1930 following coal discoveries, it rapidly grew due to the establishment of the Vorkutlag forced labor camp. The city experienced a significant population decline after the Soviet Union's fall.
