Waterloo is a city in Black Hawk County, Iowa, serving as its county seat. Originally known as Prairie Rapids Crossing, it was settled in 1845 by the Hanna, Virden, and Mullan families near Meskwaki camps. The city's name was changed to Waterloo after Charles Mullan selected it for the post office.
