Summary
Zermatt is a municipality located in the Visp district of the German-speaking Valais canton in Switzerland. Situated at 1,620 m (5,310 ft) in the Mattertal valley, it's renowned for its proximity to the Matterhorn. Originally an agricultural community, Zermatt transformed into a major Alpine tourist destination after the first ascent of the Matterhorn in 1865.
