Bulgaria's history is deeply rooted in ancient Thracian civilizations, evidenced by archaeological finds like the Karanovo culture. The region experienced periods of conflict and domination by various empires, including the Persians, Romans, and Slavs. The arrival of the Bulgars in the 7th century, led by Asparuh, marked the foundation of the First Bulgarian Empire, a significant power in Southeastern Europe. Modern Bulgaria emerged after centuries of Ottoman rule, achieving full sovereignty in 1908.
