Canada's history is deeply rooted in the presence of Indigenous peoples, who have inhabited the land for millennia. European exploration began in the 16th century with both French and British expeditions establishing settlements along the Atlantic coast. The subsequent struggle for control of North America led to British dominance following the Seven Years' War in 1763. Confederation in 1867 united several British North American colonies, gradually evolving into the modern nation.
