Croatia

Croatia's history is deeply rooted in the arrival of Slavic tribes in the 6th century, settling within the territory of the Roman Empire. Early Croatian political organization manifested in the formation of two duchies, eventually consolidating into an independent kingdom in the 9th century under Duke Branimir. Throughout the medieval period, Croatia experienced periods of independence, personal unions with Hungary, and influence from the Byzantine Empire. The Ottoman incursions of the 15th and 16th centuries led to a long period of Habsburg rule, shaping Croatian culture and institutions. In the 20th century, Croatia gained independence following the dissolution of Yugoslavia, marking a new chapter in its long and complex history.
