Federated States of Micronesia

The islands of Micronesia have a long and complex history of indigenous settlement, dating back thousands of years. European contact began in the 16th century with Spanish explorers, leading to a period of colonization and shifting control among various European powers. The region played a strategic role during World War II, witnessing intense battles and significant destruction. Following the war, Micronesia became a United Nations Trust Territory administered by the United States. The Federated States of Micronesia achieved independence in 1979, establishing a democratic government and forging a Compact of Free Association with the United States.
