Summary
Malaysia's history is deeply rooted in the ancient Malay kingdoms, which flourished through maritime trade. The arrival of European colonial powers, particularly the British, significantly shaped the region's political and economic landscape from the 18th century onwards. British influence led to the establishment of the Federated Malay States and the Straits Settlements, laying the groundwork for modern Malaysia. During World War II, the country experienced Japanese occupation, a period of hardship and resistance. Independence was achieved in 1957, and Malaysia was formed in 1963 through the union of Malaya, Sabah, Sarawak, and Singapore (Singapore later seceded).
