Summary
Liberia's origins are deeply rooted in the efforts of the American Colonization Society in the 19th century. This organization aimed to resettle free African Americans outside of the United States, believing they would find greater opportunity in Africa. Thousands of these individuals, along with Afro-Caribbeans, migrated to Liberia, establishing a unique Americo-Liberian culture. Liberia declared its independence in 1847, becoming one of the first independent African nations. Despite its early promise, the country faced internal challenges and external pressures throughout its history. Its unique founding and subsequent development have shaped its complex socio-political landscape.
