Mauritania's history is deeply rooted in the ancient region of Mauretania, a territory encompassing parts of modern-day Algeria and extending to the Atlantic coast. Berber tribes initially inhabited the area, establishing a presence by the 3rd century CE. The arrival of Arab tribes in the late 7th century brought Islam and significantly shaped the cultural landscape.
