Mauritius

The history of Mauritius is marked by a succession of colonial powers, beginning with the Portuguese in the early 16th century. Dutch settlement followed in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, but was ultimately abandoned due to challenges like cyclones and limited agricultural success. France took control in 1715, renaming the island Île de France and developing its sugar industry with enslaved labor. British rule began in 1810, following victories during the Napoleonic Wars, and continued until independence in 1968.
