Montenegro

Montenegro's history is deeply intertwined with the Illyrian tribes who first inhabited the region before the Slavic migrations of the 6th and 7th centuries. During the Early Medieval period, the area was divided into principalities like Duklja, Travunia, and Rascia, each vying for power and influence. The Principality of Zeta emerged as a significant entity in the 14th and 15th centuries, facing pressures from the expanding Venetian Republic. Southern Montenegro experienced centuries of Venetian rule, becoming part of Venetian Albania, while the name 'Montenegro' itself began to be used in the late 15th century. Despite periods of foreign domination, Montenegro maintained a strong sense of independence and a unique cultural identity.
