Romania's history is deeply rooted in ancient civilizations, beginning with settlements during the Lower Paleolithic period. The territory was once known as Dacia, and its fate was significantly altered by the Dacian Wars and subsequent Romanization under Emperor Trajan. The modern Romanian state emerged in 1859 through the unification of Moldavia and Wallachia, establishing a foundation for national identity. Achieving full independence from the Ottoman Empire in 1877, Romania solidified its sovereignty through the Treaty of Berlin. Following World War I, the nation experienced territorial expansion, incorporating regions like Transylvania and forming Greater Romania.
