Summary

Rwanda's history is marked by a complex interplay of kingdoms and migrations, with the earliest inhabitants being hunter-gatherers. The region experienced periods of both centralized rule and decentralized clan structures before the arrival of European colonial powers. German rule in the late 19th century was short-lived, giving way to Belgian administration after World War I. Belgian policies exacerbated existing ethnic tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi populations, ultimately contributing to the devastating genocide of 1994. Post-genocide Rwanda has focused on reconciliation, economic development, and establishing a stable political system.
