Summary
Slovakia's history is deeply rooted in the arrival of Slavic peoples in the 5th and 6th centuries. The territory experienced periods under the Avar Khaganate and played a role in the creation of Samo's Empire, a significant early Slavic polity. Following the collapse of the Avar Khaganate, the Principality of Nitra emerged before being absorbed into Great Moravia, a powerful 9th-century state. The fall of Great Moravia led to integration into the Kingdom of Hungary, a relationship lasting for centuries. Despite periods of destruction, such as during the Mongol invasions, the region persevered and developed a distinct cultural identity.
