Summary
Sudan's history is marked by a succession of ancient cultures, including the Khormusan, Halfan, and Kerma civilizations. The Kingdom of Kush flourished for centuries, leaving behind significant archaeological remains. Later, the region saw the rise of Christian kingdoms like Nobatia, Makuria, and Alodia, which played a vital role in the medieval period. Arab influence gradually increased from the 14th century onwards, leading to the establishment of sultanates and emirates. The 19th and 20th centuries were characterized by colonial rule and eventual independence in 1956.
