Summary
Tanzania's history is deeply rooted in ancient civilizations and migrations, evidenced by significant hominid fossil discoveries. The region experienced waves of settlement from Cushitic and Nilotic groups, alongside the expansion of Bantu-speaking peoples. During the late 19th century, the area became a part of German East Africa, later transitioning to British control after World War I. Following a period of mandated territory status, Tanganyika gained independence in 1961. In 1964, Tanganyika united with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanzania, marking a pivotal moment in East African history.
