Summary
The Caribbean Netherlands represents a unique political structure within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, established in 2010. Prior to this, these islands were part of the dissolved Netherlands Antilles, a federation of five Caribbean islands. The transition to special municipalities granted them closer ties to the European Netherlands while maintaining a degree of autonomy. Each island – Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba – possesses its own distinct character and history shaped by centuries of colonial influence. Today, they navigate a complex relationship balancing Dutch governance with local identity and development.
