Summary
The British Indian Ocean Territory is a remote Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom, located in the central Indian Ocean. Its formation stemmed from the administrative separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius during the colonial period. The archipelago consists of seven atolls encompassing over a thousand individual islands, though most are small and uninhabited. Diego Garcia, the largest island, hosts a significant joint military facility operated by the UK and the US. The territory's future is currently subject to negotiations regarding its potential return to Mauritius.
