Delaware Colony

The Delaware Colony, also known as the Lower Counties on the Delaware, was a semi‑autonomous region of the Province of Pennsylvania and functioned as a de facto British colony in North America. Established by Swedish settlers in 1638 at Fort Christina, it later passed to Dutch and then English control in the mid‑17th century. In 1701 the lower counties gained an independent colonial legislature, a status they retained until the American Revolution.
