Summary

The Colony of Demerara-Essequibo was formed by the British on 28 April 1812 through the merger of the Dutch colonies Demerara and Essequibo. It remained under British control until it merged with Berbice to become British Guiana on 21 July 1831. The colony was located on the northern coast of South America, in the area of present‑day Guyana.
