Summary
The Dominion of India was an independent dominion within the British Commonwealth from 15 August 1947 until 26 January 1950. It succeeded British India and comprised the territories that became the modern Republic of India after the adoption of its constitution. The dominion retained the British monarch as head of state while exercising full internal sovereignty.
