Summary
Saxe-Meiningen was a duchy within the Ernestine line of the House of Wettin, situated in Thuringia. Established in 1681 through a partition of Saxe-Gotha, it persisted until the end of German monarchies in 1918. Duke Bernhard I established Meiningen as his residence and initiated the construction of Schloss Elisabethenburg.
