Summary
The Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel emerged in 1567 after the division of the Landgraviate of Hesse following Philip I's death. William IV established Kassel as its capital, inheriting the northern portion of the former territory. Elevated to an Electorate in 1803, it was ruled by Landgrave William IX, becoming an Imperial Elector.
