Landgraviate of Hesse

The Landgraviate of Hesse was a principality within the Holy Roman Empire, originating in 1264. It emerged from the medieval Hessengau region, once part of Franconia, and was founded by Henry the Child. The territory experienced divisions and reunification under various landgraves, notably Philip I, who championed Protestantism.
