Summary
The Latvian SSR was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union from 1940-1941 and 1944-1990, formed after Soviet occupation and annexation. It was established following ultimatums issued by the USSR and the entry of Soviet troops in June 1940. Its existence ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, allowing Latvia to restore its independence.
