Mandatory Iraq was established in 1921 after the Iraqi Revolution against the proposed British Mandate of Mesopotamia. Faisal ibn Husayn, previously King of Syria, was appointed to rule Iraq as a kingdom under British control. The territory, historically part of the Ottoman Empire, comprised the provinces of Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra.
