Summary
The Maona of Chios and Phocaea was a Genoese entity established in 1346 to manage taxation and defense of the islands. It initially funded galley construction and reconquest efforts, later evolving into the Maona of the Giustiniani family. Despite obligations to Genoa and even Byzantine emperors, it ultimately fell under Turkish control in 1566.
