Summary
The March of Ancona was a medieval frontier march centered around Ancona, Fermo, and Macerata. Initially part of Imperial Italy, it emerged around 1100 from the March of Fermo and Byzantine territories. It was eventually acquired by the Papal States in 1198, governed by a papal rector.
