Summary
The Margraviate of Baden originated in 1112 within the Holy Roman Empire, situated along the Upper Rhine. It was founded by Herman II of the House of Zähringen, who built Hohenbaden Castle near Baden-Baden. The margraviate was split in 1535 but reunited in 1771, later becoming the Grand Duchy of Baden in 1806.
