Summary
The Kingdom of Merina, also known as the Kingdom of Madagascar, dominated much of Madagascar from the 18th century. Its spiritual center was Ambohimanga, while the political capital was Antananarivo, now Madagascar's capital. Founded around 1540 by Andriamanelo, the kingdom fell under French control after the Franco-Hova Wars in 1894.
