Summary
The Historic Centre of Trujillo is the colonial core of the city of Trujillo in northern Peru, bounded today by EspaƱa Avenue where former city walls once stood. Founded in 1534 by Diego de Almagro, it was the first city in the Viceroyalty of Peru to declare independence from Spanish rule in 1820. The area retains its original elliptical street plan and functions both as a heritage site and an active urban district.
