Summary

The New Hebrides were a colonial island group in the South Pacific governed as an Anglo-French condominium from 1906 until 1980. The territory was named by Captain James Cook in 1774 after the Hebrides in Scotland. It gained independence in 1980 and is now known as the Republic of Vanuatu.
