Old Swiss Confederacy

The Old Swiss Confederacy was a loose union of independent states within the Holy Roman Empire, serving as the precursor to modern Switzerland. Formed in the late 13th century, it expanded from a core of rural cantons to include powerful cities like Zurich and Bern. It achieved de facto independence after the Swabian War and remained a significant political entity until the French invasion in 1798.
