Summary
The Omani Empire was a powerful maritime state that dominated trade routes across the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf. It expanded its influence from the Arabian Peninsula to East Africa, including Zanzibar, and parts of modern-day Pakistan. The empire eventually split into two sultanates following the death of Said bin Sultan in 1856.
