The Patria del Friuli was the temporal domain of the Patriarch of Aquileia, an ecclesiastical state of the Holy Roman Empire from the late 11th to early 15th century. Its capital was Udine and its territory at its height included Friuli, Trieste and parts of Istria. Venice annexed it in 1420, ending the patriarch’s secular authority.
