Summary
The Principality of Montenegro existed from 1852 to 1910, succeeding centuries of theocratic rule with a secular principality. Cetinje served as its capital, and the Montenegrin perper was the state currency from 1906. Nikola I later proclaimed it a kingdom in 1910.
