Summary
The Republic of Maryland existed in West Africa from 1834 to 1857, founded by freed African-Americans from Maryland. It was established by the Maryland State Colonization Society as a colony and declared independence in 1854. Ultimately, it was annexed by Liberia in 1857 and became Maryland County.
