Summary

The Republic of Upper Volta was a landlocked West African state established in 1958 within the French Community. It gained full independence from France on August 5, 1960, with Maurice Yaméogo as its first president. In 1984, the country was renamed Burkina Faso under the leadership of Thomas Sankara.
