Summary
The Septinsular Republic existed from 1800 to 1807 in the Ionian Islands under Russian and Ottoman influence. Established after a Russo-Ottoman victory over the French, it granted autonomy but remained tributary to the Ottoman Empire. It marked the first instance of Greek self-governance since the Byzantine Empire's fall.
