Seventeen Provinces

The Seventeen Provinces referred to the Spanish Netherlands before the Dutch Revolt, encompassing territories like modern-day Netherlands, Belgium, and parts of France and Germany. Initially a personal union of counties and duchies, these lands were largely fiefs of France or the Holy Roman Empire. The region experienced significant upheaval leading to the Eighty Years' War and the formation of the Dutch Republic.
