Lordship of Milan

The Lordship of Milan emerged in 1259 with Martino della Torre as its first lord, succeeding the communal government. The Della Torre family governed until 1277, when the Visconti dynasty took control after the Battle of Desio. The Visconti later became Dukes of Milan in 1395, expanding their territory through conquest.
