Summary
The State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão was a colonial administrative division of the Portuguese Empire established in 1751. It was created by the Marquis of Pombal to stimulate economic activity and centralized governance in northern Brazil. The state was eventually dissolved in 1775 when it was merged into the State of Brazil.
