Summary
The State of Grão-Pará and Rio Negro was an administrative unit of the Portuguese Empire created in 1772 by the Marquis of Pombal. It was formed by splitting the previous State of Grão-Pará and Maranhão to improve economic management. In 1775, it was merged into the State of Brazil, though it retained some autonomy until 1823.
