Summary
The State of Katanga was a short-lived breakaway state that declared independence from Congo-Léopoldville in 1960 under the leadership of Moïse Tshombe. It was heavily supported by the mining company Union Minière du Haut-Katanga and Belgian military advisors. The secession ended in 1963 after United Nations forces intervened.
