Sultanate of Sambas

The Sultanate of Sambas was a traditional Malay state located on the western coast of Borneo. Established as a kingdom in 1609, it became a center for maritime trade and piracy during the colonial era. The sultanate joined the Republic of the United States of Indonesia in 1950.
