Summary
The Sultanate of Sulu was a Sunni Muslim thalassocracy that governed the Sulu Archipelago and parts of Borneo. Founded by Sharif ul-Hashim in the 15th century, it maintained independence from the Bruneian Empire for centuries. Its sovereign powers were formally relinquished to the United States in 1915.
